Many large organisations have their own in-house IT departments, and others bring in advice and support. There are graduate recruitment opportunities in industry and commerce, especially within financial organisations and retail, in the public sector, and with consultancies and IT services providers.

Key sectors for hardware and software development are defence, telecomms, aerospace and e-commerce. In 2002, 56% of first jobs were open to graduates from any degree, so getting in is competitive. However, a rising demand for high-level skills is predicted over the next decade, creating around 168,000 new jobs a year.
