What do I need to get into HE?

What do I need to get into HE?

There are several ways to get into HE - here we explain the options.

HE is easyThe route you choose into higher education depends on your existing qualifications and work experience. If you need advice on which level programme would suit you, please contact the Learning Shop or one of the colleges or universities in this guide

The traditional route - A Levels and equivalent qualifications
If you already hold GCSEs and A Levels, you'll find these are the most commonly used university entrance qualifications in the UK, along with Vocational A Levels (AVCE) and Advanced Level GNVQs. There are a wide range of other qualifications such as National Diplomas, Foundation Diplomas and Access courses which are also accepted.

NVQs and Advanced Modern Apprenticeships also help to provide suitability for a course. Please check with the college or university you are interested in before applying to check whether your qualifications can be accepted.

If you don't have the formal entry qualifications
Maybe you're thinking of returning to study after a career break, or want to improve your qualifications and learn new skills. All the colleges and universities in Norfolk and Waveney are working hard to widen access to learning. If you don't hold traditional qualifications, don't worry. Your work and life experience and your desire to return to learning will all be taken into account in relation to the course you are interested in. All the institutions in this guide offer the opportunity to visit and have an informal discussion and will answer your questions on returning to study.

Kev, mature student"I'd spent more than 25 years teaching when I decided to pursue a long-held ambition to study art. I started with an Access course while still teaching part time - it was a challenging and supportive course which I thoroughly enjoyed. Then I was accepted for the BA Visual Studies course at Norwich School of Art and Design. I was lucky to have the full support of my family throughout, but to anyone considering making this kind of change, I'd say go for it if you possibly can! It's surprising how you can adapt to a lower income and the pleasure from pursuing an interest more than makes up for it." Kevin Hunn, mature student
