Staff at The Learning Shop
Helen Richardson-Hulme
I have worked in a variety of advice and guidance settings including most recently in the further and higher education sector. My previous experience includes working with young people aged 13-19 in the area of widening participation, where my role involved helping to remove the barriers that many young people face when trying to access learning and training. I am very proud of The Learning Shop and of the work that our specialist advisers do. They provide an excellent and invaluable service to adults in Norwich and Norfolk

Following many years of work in the voluntary sector, I joined City College Norwich in 1996 in an administrative capacity in the School of Construction.
I have worked as an adviser at The Learning Shop since it opened in May 1997. As a graduate, I have also gained professional guidance qualifications to NVQ4.
I feel passionate about the work of The Learning Shop. My hope is that all clients who leave The Learning Shop have gained encouragement, information and/or guidance to help them move forward to fulfill their potential in whatever way is appropriate to them as an individual. At the very least they should have impartial information on which to make an informed decision.

Prior to becoming an Adviser at The learning Shop I had a career in Nursing. When looking at other career options it was very difficult to find direction ans so I decided to go back into to education and completed the Access Course in Arts and Humanities at the City College Norwich. I then stayed on at CCN to study for an BA Hons degree in English and Psychology, during which time I worked part time as a Student Assistant at The learning Shop. Once I had graduated | was fortunate enough to get the position as Adviser for the UEA and now job share with my UEA colleague Antonia.

I have been a full-time adviser at the Learning Shop since September 2008. I came to the role after working in Schools Liaison at City College Norwich where I worked in an IAG role with the 14-19 age group and building links with local schools and colleges. Prior to working in the area of information, advice and guidance I worked as an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) teacher in the Adult Education sector.
Furthering educational awareness and potential amongst refugee and asylum seeker minority groups is a particular interest of mine and has led me to forge strong links with local charities and organisations working in this area.
I find working in the IAG sector immensely rewarding and I believe very strongly in the community benefits of a place like the Learning Shop. We see thousands of members of public every year - the majority of these go away from us having found what they were looking for and feeling positive about themselves and the opportunities open to them. Something I'm very proud to be a part of!

As a passionate advocate in the concept of that it's never too late to start learning or to embark on a new life path, working in the Learning Shop is ideal. To be able to provide someone the information, advice and guidance that could potentially bring a new direction, a new focus is a gift. Particularly in the current climate, giving people choices and ideas to allow them to move forward in their lives and careers is very rewarding.
Having grown up in Norwich, I moved to Leeds to attend University and stayed there for a another ten years supporting people into education, training and employment working for Leeds City Council. I returned to Norwich in 2003 and have a worked in a variety of roles for City College and started with the Learning Shop in May 2009. From my work at the College and my own lifelong learning, I have developed an extensive knowledge of courses and opportunities available in and around the city that I can pass onto you.

Having started my career volunteering at WEETU (Women's Employment Training Unit) in 2001 I have gone on to qualify at graduate level in advice and guidance. I started here at the Learning Shop in 2005 and continue to enjoy my work. No two days are the same, as no two clients are. I find the work to be satisfying and rewarding, enabling learners to make informed choices regarding applying to university, employment and training. I look forward to answering your enquiries both face to face and via our website. Good luck.

I started working City College Norwich in May 2009 where I trained as an Adviser. In October I was offered a maternity cover post at The Learning Shop. I'm a great supporter of lifelong learning and am currently working towards an Advice and Guidance NVQ level 4 qualification.
I offer impartial advice and guidance to empower clients to make their own choices about thei future. It is a fantastic opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients to help find learning opportunities to meet their needs; this may be for leisure, personal development or a change of career. I feel a real sense of achievement when clients leave the Shop with a clear direction and full of positivity.

I began work at City College Norwich in September 2001 as a Facilitator supporting learners in all levels of classes. This experience gave me a valuable insight into some of the difficulties learners overcome in order to study and into the wide variety of classes offered by the College, both of which proved invaluable for my later work as an adviser.
I have been working as an Adviser since 2004 and as Team Leader since 2006. I very much enjoy being Team Leader to the Learning Shop as it is such a positive place and based in the centre of Norwich it is an important asset to many people who may otherwise find it difficult to access the advice and guidance they need to progress their learning.
The Learning Shop is a unique partnership which enables advisers to give guidance on a wide range of learning options, and the team is completely focussed on giving the best possible service which shows in the excellent customer feedback we receive on a regular basis.
It is lovely to be involved in such a positive service which changes peoples lives by opening up their perceptions of the learning they may be able to undertake and giving crucial information about how and where they can access the learning they need.
